Asthma Sucks!

For those of you who don't know, Baby Girl has asthma. She stayed pretty sick her first two years of life - for the first year or so, docs kept telling me "kids get colds." But I knew there was something else going on, it just didn't seem right. I won't go into all the details here, now, but I will say that you should always trust your instincts as a parent. While I am not happy that my daughter has asthma, I am so glad I pushed docs and didn't listen when they told me "it's just a cold." If I hadn't pushed, I probably wouldn't have my daughter with me today.

So, Baby Girl is sick now, really sick. It's miserable, pitiful, awful. She's been coughing for a week and a half, nothing seemed to help. We went to see her allergist last Thursday, he put her on an oral steroid to knock out the cough and switched her from her nebulizer to inhalers - a switch I had been SO ready for, but Baby Girl, not so much. Her breathing had seemed okay, her ears were clear, and the orapred should have knocked out her cough in a couple days. Well, it didn't. Sunday night was awful, she coughed all night, couldn't get comfortable, cried. She still had no fever yesterday, so symptoms of anything other than a cough, but I took her to the doc first thing yesterday morning. She ended up throwing up mucous from coughing so hard while we were there, and turns out, she has a pretty severe double ear infection that apparently popped up out of nowhere. And thank goodness we caught it pretty early - all the other symptoms kicked in shortly after we got home from the doc - fever, goopy eyes, no appetite. No fun!!!!!

So, this post did not turn out the way I had hoped, I apologize that it is just me rambling and venting - I think I am just so tired that I really just can't think straight. I really just want to get the point across that you should always be persistent and follow your intuition, especially when it comes to your children. I know the docs are the ones with the expertise, but as parents, we know our children better than anyone.

Okay, I am done rambling. I think I have an idea for a giveaway now though, so stay tuned, I'll work it all out and try to post later today, maybe tomorrow.

  1. Is her asthma allergy induced or all the time. Basically does she just get wheezy when her allergies are bad or all the time.

My oldest has allergy induced asthma (has had it forever-but diagnosed when she was 3-finally) and we do a saline nasal rinse on her. It works wonders to clear her nasal cavities and get rid of junk in her nose. Once the allergies are under control the asthma doesn't flare up again, until she gets sick. I totally understand what you are going through.

  3. Heather - Baby Girl's asthma is not allergy-induced; she's been through all the allergy testing to find only a very slight allergy to dogs, so slight that the doc said we did not need to get rid of our indoor dogs - they don't shed, we have hardwoods, air purifiers, etc. Baby Girl's is most likely due to the fact that we live in one of the worst cities for asthma, and apparently it runs in Hubby's family. I just hate when she gets sick, I am always so nervous she'll end up in the hospital again. Oh - Glad to see you like your Scentsy warmer - I have never tried them myself, but bought one for my stepmom for Christmas.

I am loving Speaking from the Crib! Thanks for stopping by and following! And it's always cool to find people with the same bday!

  5. Thank you Michelle! I am happy to report that she is going to school today! At least that's the plan - she hasn't woken up this morning though, and she didn't have the best night. But she really needs to go to school, b/c I need to be able to take some sinus meds and get in the bed myself!

  6. Well fortunately for her she might out grow it. My birth mom had horrible asthma when she was little and out grew it when she was in her teens. I pray that your little lady will outgrow it. I guess it really doesn't help that where you live is a high asthma city. We live on 20 acres in Oklahoma and my daughter is allergic to trees. Even if we were to move into town, it wouldn't help any because the wind is horrible.

Your stepmom will love the Scentsy warmer. They smell so good.
